Plastic confusion
I’m confused. Ok, so I’m confused on a daily basis, but I’m specifically confused today about plastics. There have been questions lately about the safety of plastic bottles. Can they be reused? Can you freeze them? Are plastic sports bottles safe? What about plastic baby bottles? I’ve been trying to do some research on what’s safe and what isn’t and I’m getting conflicting reports. I’m trying to sort it all out. As soon as I do I will get back to you with a post. In the meantime, maybe someone can enlighten me. I would love to hear from you regarding this subject.

I took my Grandson to see the latest Harry Potter movie today. I take him to see every new Harry Potter movie the day it comes out. I’m a little sad that there are only two movies left, and then the tradition ends. Of course, by then he will be 14 and probably won’t want to be seen with his Grams. Anyway, on the way out to the car we passed Michael’s craft store. Right inside the door they had a recycle bin just for plastic bags. I knew they were out there but this was the first time I had seen one. I was excited because I always feel so guilty about throwing those bags out. I try to use my canvas bags when I shop, but sometimes I forget them, and you know Hubby is not gonna leave the house with a pink canvas bag. I’m just so happy he’s willing to help with the shopping that I don’t want to push it. So I’m left with all these plastic bags lying around. I even got one of those cute little bags that hold them. You stuff the plastic bags in through the top and pull them out the bottom. I try to reuse them when possible but recycling them is so much better. Some grocery chains will give you a couple of cents back for every bag you reuse. I’m still unemployed so anytime someone wants to give me a few cents back, I’m going to take it.
Our baby step today is recycling those plastic bags. Next time you go shopping check and see if they have a bin. I found two in one day, one at Michael’s and one at the grocery store. (Stop and Shop). It even gives me an excuse to go to the craft store, gotta love that.
Do you have any traditions you share with your children or grandchildren, maybe a niece, nephew or cousin? I would love to hear them. Thanks for visiting, looking forward to reading your comments, stories, questions and suggestions.

As far as the plastic bottles go, I’m also confused by conflicting reports. However, I tend to go middle of the road and just rely on my own common sense when there are so many people going erratically one way or the other. I buy bottled water and only use one or two bottle of it a week. I reuse my bottle for a few days and then toss it when it is convenient, then get another bottle. A case of water usually lasts me a month or so this way. Is that the ultimate solution? Of course not. The better way would be to use a reusable bottle all of the time but I am not that organized and I usually end up losing my bottle anyway.
.
This works for me and it makes sense for me. That is all anyone could hope for in the long run
okay maybe not but you get my point.
As far as the plastic bags, I’ve seen some interesting things lately about how you can take several layers and iron them together to make a durable sheet of plastic. It’s fascinating really. Here is a link to an article on it.

I’m not sure what you’d do with the plastic sheet but the options are endless.
Traditions..hmm. My son and I go out just the two of us every now and then. He picks where we go and then a place for us to eat together. It’s really special to me because it was just the two of us for five and a half years and I miss having every day just to ourselves so this is a great way to reconnect with that bond and assure myself it is still there.
I’m sure we have all sorts of traditions but that one just came to mind.
Still loving your blog and your common sense approach to going green. It’s nice to come where you can learn some things and not be judged a horrible person for not jumping on some radical’s bandwagon. We’re normal, we’re human, we need to take it bit by bit. Most people can’t afford to devote our life to going green all at once. You encourage those people who might have given up without your non judgmental approach.
Wuffs ya,
Christy
Christy, thank you for your comment. I truly believe that each and every small thing we do will help. I applaud your efforts, don’t feel guilty about what you don’t do, be pleased with yourself for what you do.
My husband and his mom used to have dinner together every Tuesday. When we got married she invited me. I went the first time and really enjoyed it. Then I decided that I would make excuses so he would go alone. I thought their time together was important. I would go maybe once a month just because I enjoyed spending time with her also. Now that she’s gone I know he misses his Tuesday night dinners but he has those memories. Tradition is important. thank you for sharing your story with us.
